1960s–‘70s
The White Elephant Club
Charlie Chaplin and Richard Burton, Donald Sutherland and Shirley MacLaine: Hollywood’s legendary stars mingled with London high society and the era’s It girls at the posh gathering spot known as The White Elephant Club, founded by renowned British actor and producer Leslie Linder.
Throughout its early years, The White Elephant Club became the sought-after location for private after-parties celebrating movie premieres, concert events, and the plays and musicals debuting in the West End. Other notables who frequented the club included Shirley Bassey and Rod Stewart, while Roger Moore, Peter Finch, and Laurence Harvey were among the celebrities who contributed their own recipes and artwork to a cookbook that raised funds for a children’s charity.
1992
John Aspinall Enters the Scene
Integral to London’s gaming scene, conservationist and gaming impresario John Aspinall became key to the British government’s decision to pass the Betting and Gaming Act of 1960, which ultimately paved the way for licensed members-only casinos. Renowned for his gaming parties, Aspinall acquired The White Elephant Club in 1992 and rechristened it Aspinall’s, converting the popular dining destination into an upscale club that blended cocktails and dining with table games for discerning members.
Aspinall used the proceeds from his clubs and his personal gaming to establish animal sanctuaries that include Howletts Wild Animal Park, a 90-acre Kent Zoo that today is home to hundreds of animals.
